“Marc’s walk” was created in 2011 and since then has raised over £64,000. The majority
of this was donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust Jersey Appeal and CLIC Sargent
Cancer Care for Children (Jersey), with smaller amounts going to Mont à l’Abbé School
and the Antoine Trust (Robin Ward at Jersey General Hospital).
Teenage Cancer Trust’s Jersey appeal has helped contribute to building a specialist
unit for teenagers with cancer at Southampton Hospital, where Marc spent
many months in a general adult ward receiving chemotherapy. The ward was completed
in 2013 and most Channel Island teenagers with cancer will be treated here.
Now that the unit has been built, the Jersey Appeal aims to help reach an annual
target of £399,600, which is the cost of staffing and running the specialist unit.
CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children (Jersey) supports local children and teenagers
with cancer and helps their families both financially and emotionally.
The walk is in memory of Marc Nieuwburg, who died of bone cancer in 2006 at the
age of 19. Like last year, there will be a choice of three starting points, all along the
same route: Val de la Mare reservoir (15 miles), Jersey Pearl in St Ouen’s bay (11 miles)
and Corbiere (7 miles), with all the walks ending at the St. Helier waterfront.
